DIWAN EL BANAT - PORTRAIT

diwan el banat picDiwan El Banat is a group from Israel made up of five musicians based in Jerusalem. The band’s name Diwan El Banat is a term from Arabic culture meaning “the sitting room where women get together”.

The musicians of Diwan El Banat play both traditional oriental instruments and modern Western instruments. These include the Persian tar (a long-necked lute), the Turkish saz (likewise a long-necked lute), percussion instruments such as the oriental darbuka and electric bass.

The band interprets traditional songs from across oriental cultures. Their repertoire includes folk songs from countries such as Israel, Azerbaijan, Morocco and Greece that are also sung in the respective languages. In addition to the traditional pieces, their own arrangements and compositions lend the band their unique sound. Apart from the unusual instrumentation, the expressive vocals of singer Tamar Bloch stand out, making the band highly recognisable.

In their concerts, Diwan El Banat take their audience on a musical journey. A mix of liturgical poetry, soulful vocal improvisations and fiery oriental rhythms allow listeners to experience a wealth of emotions. Diwan El Banat have performed at a number at festivals and other events throughout Israel. They are also regularly booked for concerts outside their home country.
